Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) is the world’s leading achievement award for young people, recognised by employers and universities alike. It promotes personal development through participation in this enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme. It is a non-competitive programme that will give participants skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. St. Edmund’s is proud to successfully deliver the DofE to its students.

A high quality DofE programme is offered to all students. This provides the opportunity to progress through all levels of the award, learning and developing new skills along the way. The award is split into different sections each allowing participants different and exciting challenges and opportunities. Indeed, many of those who enrol undertake new interests that they may never have considered if they had not begun the programme.

  • Bronze: Form 9 upwards
  • Silver: Form 10 upwards

Both award levels consist of four sections: Skills, Physical, Volunteering, and Expedition.

Over the last few years, there has been an increase in participation and completion numbers across all levels.

Expeditions

Bronze award participants complete a two-day / one-night expedition in rural countryside familiar which is familiar and local to the group. In the past, groups have explored various parts of the South Downs. Silver award participants complete a three-day / two-night expedition in rural countryside unfamiliar to the group, with previous groups having ventured as far as Dorset.

Expeditions are organised by the school’s DofE coordinator, Mr Sikipa, and are delivered by DofE Approved Activity Providers (AAPs). AAPs are organisations which have been licensed by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to provide expedition opportunities to participants. Students are supervised by a team of expedition instructors (DBS certified and First Aid qualified) to ensure that the experience is run smoothly and safely.
