Design and Technology

Design and Technology (DT) is excellent training for life in the twenty-first century. It enables pupils to develop skills that will serve them well in their futures, including communication and collaborative working. Design and Technology allows pupils to consider and solve problems through creative thinking, planning and design and by working with different media, materials and tools.

Design Technology GCSE leverages increasingly sophisticated resources, including a dedicated teaching environment, manufacturing equipment and specialist teaching. As pupils progress through this phase, they may be given the opportunity to focus on specific aspects of the subject such as resistant materials and manufacturing; including traditional and modern techniques, which include CAD/CAM. This leads towards the iGCSE in Product Design.

However, at the core of Design and Technology is creativity and imagination. Pupils learn to design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. To do this effectively, they will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on additional disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Furthermore, our Design and Technology pupils gain a great understanding of the creative and production processes, as well as a grasp of the commercial realities of manufacturing in the modern world, an important grounding whatever path they follow.
