New Harmony Hub to bring learning and nature together

Yesterday, Monday 21 September 2026 saw us officially open our new Harmony Hub, a purpose-built outdoor learning space designed to help pupils connect their learning with nature, sustainability and the world around them.

The Hub was officially opened by Richard Dunne, founder of The Harmony Project, who joined pupils and staff for a special afternoon celebrating outdoor learning and the School’s growing commitment to the principles of Harmony.

In a fitting departure from the traditional red ribbon, Richard cut a green ribbon to officially open the new space, before talking to pupils about the importance of learning from and connecting with the natural world.

Richard also shared with the children that he had met King Charles III last week, whose longstanding interest in nature, sustainability and the environment closely aligns with many of the principles underpinning Harmony.

He told pupils how pleased he was to see St. Edmund’s becoming part of the growing Harmony Project movement, which is helping schools place nature, sustainability and an understanding of how the world is interconnected at the heart of education.

When Richard asked the children whether they enjoyed learning in nature more than learning in the classroom, the response was unanimous, with every hand going up.

Pupils were keen to explain what they enjoyed about learning outdoors, describing the beauty of the natural world, the benefits of fresh air and the enjoyment of listening to birds and other wildlife. Others spoke about how being outside and surrounded by nature can help them feel calmer when they are stressed.

The new Harmony Hub will help St. Edmund’s turn that enthusiasm into an everyday part of school life, providing a dedicated outdoor classroom where pupils can explore, investigate and make connections between their learning and the natural world.

The opening was attended by pupils from across the Prep School, including the School’s Harmony Committee from Forms 3–6, alongside all Form 3 pupils.

Dr Adam Walliker, Head of St. Edmund’s School, welcomed guests and spoke about the importance of giving children opportunities to learn beyond the traditional classroom and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Adrian Adams, Assistant Head: Curriculum at St. Edmund’s, explained how the principles of Harmony are being embedded across the curriculum, ensuring sustainability is not treated as a standalone initiative but is woven meaningfully into pupils’ wider learning.

He also spoke about the important role pupils themselves will play, with the School’s Harmony Committee having a genuine voice in shaping how St. Edmund’s cares for its grounds, works more sustainably and develops its relationship with the natural environment. Adrian also encouraged pupils to recognise the work taking place behind the scenes, thanking teachers who are redesigning lessons to create greater connections between subjects and the natural world, and reminding the children of the importance of gratitude for the work of others.

Dr Walliker said:

“The Harmony Hub is an exciting addition to St. Edmund’s and reflects our belief that some of the most powerful learning happens when children are able to make connections – between subjects, between themselves and others, and with the natural world. We want our pupils not simply to learn about sustainability, but to develop the curiosity, understanding and sense of responsibility that will help them make a positive contribution to the world around them.”

The Harmony Hub will now become an integral part of learning at St. Edmund’s, giving pupils opportunities to take their learning outdoors and explore themes including nature, sustainability, biodiversity and environmental responsibility.
