Form 10 GCSE Drama and Music Pupils Inspired by Memorable London Theatre Trip

Last week  our Form 10 GCSE Drama and Music pupils travelled to London for a day exploring some of the capital’s most famous theatres and performances.

The day began with an unexpected twist, as a nationwide signal failure caused disruption to train services and briefly threatened to derail our plans. Thankfully, services resumed shortly afterwards and the group was able to continue the journey with only a slight delay.

Our first destination was the iconic National Theatre, where pupils explored a range of performance spaces, including the world-famous Olivier Theatre, alive with rehearsals for War Horse. The backstage tour proved a particular highlight, offering fascinating insight into set construction and prop design. Pupils were especially captivated by the sight of an enormous eight-foot polystyrene horse’s head suspended dramatically from the workshop ceiling.

Following the tour, the group crossed the Thames for lunch before heading to Shaftesbury Avenue and the Lyric Theatre to watch the acclaimed musical Hadestown.

The performance made a lasting impression on the pupils, with one describing it as “the best production I have ever seen.”

The experience has left everyone feeling inspired and excited about the possibility of performing Hadestown ourselves next year. We hope to bring some of the show’s creativity, energy and magic to our own stage.
