Food Preparation and Nutrition
Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE provides students with the understanding, knowledge and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, food nutrition and healthy eating. Through both practical and theory lessons, students learn about food, nutrition and health, food science, food safety, food choice and food provenance. Pupils are encouraged to experiment and adapt recipes, developing their confidence and independence to ensure higher levels of achievement at GCSE level.
The Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE helps our pupils learn a whole range of transferable life skills such as budgeting, organisation, teamwork, numeracy and literacy, that allow them to become highly valued employees in a huge range of sectors including hospitality, food production, education, retail, journalism and more.
Senior School pupils studying this course also complete an essential cooking skills certificate with Leith’s school of Cookery, guided by the Leith’s chefs through digital devices. They learn 12 recipes which are designed to serve the whole family with a focus on modern family meals using seasonal and sustainable ingredients. Each pupil receives a personalised certificate at the end of the course which works alongside the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold scheme.
